Sheila was referred to us by her own dentist at The Orchard Dental Practice in Maidstone, having lost several teeth in the upper left side. She was finding difficulty chewing comfortably and was conscious of having to chew only on the right side. Understandably, she was unhappy at the prospect of having to wear a partial denture to replace the missing teeth on the upper left side. Sheila was prone to periodontitis, a type of gum disease causing bone loss leading to the mobility and eventual loss of the upper left teeth as well as one back tooth on the lower right side. Fortunately this had been treated and stabilised subsequently by a gum specialist and it is unlikely that Sheila will lose further teeth from gum problems.
Sheila’s initial treatment involved a preliminary simple bone augmentation procedure to provide a good foundation for 3 implants to be subsequently placed in the upper left. All the treatment was easily and painlessly accomplished under local anaesthesia. As Sheila was a little nervous of the treatment, this was supplemented with an intravenous sedative for the initial bone augmentation and implant placement.
After several months to allow the implants to integrate and for the bone augmentation to consolidate, impressions were taken for Paul Dumpleton at Smile Design, the specialist laboratory, to expertly create beautiful porcelain crowns to be permanently attached to the implants to replace the missing teeth.
The treatment undertaken has restored form and function with aesthetically pleasing implant supported crowns.
Sheila has been a delightful patient to treat and has rewarded our efforts frequently with the fresh produce from her garden and great home made jam!
Having had the first round of implant treatment completed with us, Sheila returned to us in 2009 when she developed problems with an old failing bridge on her upper front teeth. She felt confident with her decision to proceed with further implant treatment because of her previous successful experience under our care.
