I have known Bob for a number of years as we live in the same village in Kent. Bob has had a problem with periodontitis which, combined with smoking over a number of years, led to the gradual loosening of a number of his teeth. Eventually some of these teeth, particularly in the upper arch, were lost. Bob had previously had treatment with a specialist periodontist which had largely stabilised the underlying problem. He was determined to give up smoking. This was an important step as it would both greatly improve the resolution of the underlying periodontal problem, but also significantly increase the predicted success rate of any planned dental implant treatment.
Once Bob had successfully ceased smoking and attended for some further basic periodontal treatment, we were able to replace a number of missing upper teeth, including one in the upper front, with implant supported crowns. The treatment has been undertaken in small stages comfortably and painlessly. The underlying periodontal condition is carefully maintained to minimise the likelihood of further tooth loss. However, further implant treatment can be readily undertaken were this to happen.
Bob’s case highlights the importance of smoking cessation as a prerequisite to predictable successful implant treatment. Bob is a really motivated patient who gave up smoking after many years and has really enjoyed the benefit of the comfort and permanence of dental implant treatment. He is a strong advocate of dental implants and is adamant that this treatment has been easier to undergo than his previous experience of routine dental treatment.
I do refer people to The Implant Experts because they do what it says on the tin, they’re experts ….period.
